The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

PG-13
Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, and the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch
Running Time: 2 Hours and 41 Minutes

This is the second installment of the "Hobbit" series. "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug" is jam packed with high adventure and exciting tales.
Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellan), Thorin (Richard Armitage) and the crew of dwarves continue their journey to the lonely mountain where the vicious and cunning dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) dwells, guarding the dwarves' treasure and former home.
Along the way, this band of characters encounters orcs, elves, disgusting mega-giant spiders and even a shapeshifter, not to mention the gigantic dragon Smaug himself!
While the initial "Hobbit" movie film felt slow, "The Desolation of Smaug" keeps a fast yet fun pace. Elements of "Smaug" are fantastical, but none feel quite so contrived as the long goblin scene from the first film. Peter Jackson appears to be back to "The Lord of the Rings" form with "Desolation", so both hardcore "Hobbit" fans and regular moviegoers alike should be happy with what they see. Go and see it, even if only to see what Peter Jackson and his crew have done with the amazing dragon "Smaug", who is as well animated as he is voiced. You will not be disappointed.
I really enjoyed this movie. I found the dragon "Smaug" to be so life-like and real that is was just incredible! The giant spiders were gross and disgusting and very realistic!
Parents be advised: This movie is a really fun and exciting movie, however, the scenes with the spiders and the dragon were very intense and frightening. This movie warrants its PG-13 rating.
I am giving "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug", three and a half bags of popcorn.

  1. Nice review. Let's hope that Jackson at least does make this next one, the last for the trilogy. I don't know if I can handle another round of these flicks.
